在村支书的号召下，全村人捐得两万多元钱。捐款名单一公布，就有人说：“杜老漢生活条件那么好，却一分钱也不捐，真做得出呀。”还有人说：“两家不和，不捐也没什么。”有的说：“萌萌没伤害人家呀，怎么能记仇不捐？平时看着蛮好的一个人，关键时刻没爱心。”杜老汉站在村支书后面听得一清二楚。村支书拉他离开，劝他想开点。杜老汉说：“没关系，不知情嘛。”
回到家，老伴责怪他：“你脑子不开窍，说不捐就一点也不表示，捐五十元也是捐啊，堵住人家的口。你听听人家议论我们没爱心，以后有困难，谁帮我们？”杜老汉说：“你捐呀。”老伴说：“名单都出来了，还捐什么捐呀？”
萌萌到省城动手术，幸好是良性肿瘤，几个月后就康复出院了。
几年后，萌萌考上了省重点大学法律专业，毕业后分配到县法院工作。
杜老汉因患肺癌去世了。送葬那天，没多少人参加，王小乐一家也没去。村支书看着心痛，他让杜老汉的灵柩停在村口的大樟树下，要为杜老汉开一个隆重的追悼会。他在村广播里要求全村人参加，任何人不得缺席，还特别通知了萌萌。
萌萌接到电话后，匆匆赶回村里。村支书拉着她到杜老汉灵柩前，说：“你拜一拜杜大伯吧。”萌萌虽然不理解村支书为何对杜老汉的葬礼如此看重，但还是很恭敬地拜了一下。然后，村支书对大家说：“今天我向大家公布一件事情，当年萌萌患脑瘤，大家都伸出了援助之手。捐款名单公布之后，大家都指责老杜没爱心。但是你们知道吗，老杜给萌萌捐了五千元。因为他老伴跟王小乐的妻子有过节，他深知王小乐不会接受他的捐款，也不希望老伴知道，引来不必要的麻烦，所以他求我不要公布他的名字。这张王会计为他当年的捐款出具的条子还在我这里。”说着，村支书扬起手中的条子让大伙看。大家一一看过后，都被杜老汉的爱心感动不已，人们一路相送杜老汉的灵柩到山上。萌萌一家人哭得跟泪人一般。
原来，杜老汉捐款时，本想什么条子也不要，村支书说：“不行，要写个证明条子。”写完条子，杜老汉签了字，村里的几个干部也签了字，并按照杜老汉的意思，一直为他保守秘密……
