义类词典的理论源头可以追溯到古希腊语法学家、历史学家Philo of Byblos(又名Hernnius Philon?64―141)的On Synonyms(《论同义词》)以及Ammonius Grammaticus由此缩写而成的On the Differences of Synonymous Expressions(《论同义表达法的区别》)。Philo of Byblos也是世界上第一本类似“同义词词林”的参考书的编者,该书实际上是根据范畴编排的科技作家及其作品和城市与其著名市民名称的汇编。真正接近当代义类词典的当属法国语法学家Gabriel Girard(1677―1748)的La justesse de la langue franaise(《法语精准词典》,1718)以及据此出版的Synonymes franais(《法语同义词词典》,1736)。英语义类词典的源头可以追溯到七八世纪的词集,如The Leiden Glossary(《莱登词集》)。
其次,出版机构开始重视用户友好原则和用户市场细分,特别注重检索方便和差异化竞争,编排方式在语义分类的基础上采用字母顺序,目标用户更加明确。柯林斯公司将用户对象主要定位在中等和中等以下英语水平的用户,编纂出版的Collins Primary Thesaurus(《柯林斯小学生义类词典》,2005)、Collins School Thesaurus(《柯林斯学生义类词典》,2009)等词典,即其证明。
20世纪美国义类词典的发展主体集中在近30年,具有以下特点。
(《新编韦伯斯特国际义类词典》,1971)、署名MerriamWebster的The MerriamWebster Thesaurus(《梅里亚姆―韦伯斯特义类词典》,1978)和MerriamWebsters Collegiate Thesaurus(《梅里亚姆―韦伯斯特大学义类词典》,1988)、Mass Market Paperback出版的Websters New World Thesaurus(《新编韦伯斯特国际义类词典》,1999)等。
此外,上述词典运行的媒介除了传统的纸质、20世纪末期的光盘与网络之外,手机、iPod和iPad正在成为美国词典媒介转变的新模式,5.0.1版Websters New World College Dictionary and Rogets AZ Thesaurus(《新编韦伯斯特大学词典与罗杰义类词典》)便是很好的例证。这种释义词典与义类词典组合的新型运行媒介的开发和应用值得汉语词典编纂者和研究者高度关注和借鉴。
